The focus of the Bioinformatics program is to train the next generation of bioinformatics researchers for academia and industry and also to meet demand from the, Structural Biology, Pharmaceutical, Biomedicine, Medical informatics and Biotechnology industries.

Master of Science (M. Sc) in Bioinformatics

The study of PG course of bioinformatics includes the areas of development of new computational methods for studying organization and evolution of genes and genomes, computational approaches to macromolecular structure and dynamics and simulation, comparative evolutionary genomics, Drug design & discovery, pharmacogenomics, algorithm development, data base development, sequence analysis, data mining, Prediction and analysis of structure etc.

Duration: 2 Years; Regular Course

Eligibility for M. Sc Bioinformatics:
Bachelor’s Degree in any Biological Sciences (Bioinformatics, Botany, Zoology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology etc) / Physics/Chemistry / Agricultural / Veterinary / Fisheries Sciences / Pharmacy / Medicine/ Engineering and Technology or equivalent Degree with at least 55% of marks in Part III.


Admission: Based on the percentage of marks in the P.G Qualifying Examination


Value-added courses

Value-added courses are part of the curriculum designed to impart the necessary skills to increase employability and equip students with the essential skills to succeed in life. The Department of Bioinformatics offers a variety of value added courses which are conducted after class hours (5.30-6.30 pm). These courses are conducted by in-house staff and help students stand out from the rest in the job market by adding value to their resume. These value-added courses are often independent of each type of department.


Self-Learning Courses from MOOCs platforms

  • MOOCs shall be on voluntary for the students.
  • PG students have to undergo a total of 2 Self Learning Courses (MOOCs) one in II sem and another in III sem.
  • The actual credits earned through MOOCs shall be transferred to the credit plan of programmes as extra credits.
  • Otherwise 2 credits/course be given if the Self Learning Course (MOOCs) is without credit.
  • While selecting the MOOCs, preference shall be given to the course related to employability skills

  • Master of Philosophy (M. Phil) in Bioinformatics

    The study of M. Phil course of bioinformatics includes major and recent advances in structural and computational biology. This course enabling analytical and scientific facet of research approach. Students can get placements as mentors, Programmers, Research analysts, in Health - care IT sectors .

    Duration: 1 Year; Regular Course

    Eligibility for M. Phil Bioinformatics:
    Master’s Degree in any Biological Sciences (Bioinformatics, Botany, Zoology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology etc) / Physics/Chemistry / Agricultural / Veterinary / Fisheries Sciences / Pharmacy / Medicine/ Engineering and Technology or equivalent Degree with at least 55% of marks.

    Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D) in Bioinformatics

    Department of Bioinformatics, Alagappa University is now broadening its scope to include a Ph.D program in Bioinformatics. To further strengthen teaching and research environment in the department. The mission of the Bioinformatics Ph.D Program is to prepare scholars to reach the forefront of leadership in the field of bioinformatics and computational biology; and to integrate research and education on information technologies in biology, medicine, Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences, Fisheries Sciences.

    Eligibility for PhD degree: Degree at Post Graduate level in Bioinformatics or Biological Sciences (Biotechnology, Life Sciences, Botany, Zoology, Biochemistry, Microbiology etc) /Chemistry/Bio-Physics/ Veterinary Science / Agriculture / Fisheries Sciences / Pharmacy / Medicine or other related areas with not less than 55% mark in the aggregate is eligible for registration for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

    Admission :
    CSIR/UGC-NET/SLET/DBT/ICMR/ICAR qualified candidates and M.Phil degree holders will be given preference and they are directly eligible for interview conducted by university. However, in exceptional cases, candidates without NET may be considered upon satisfactory performance in written test / interview conducted at the department/University.
